A mind aware
of what is right

Our Latin motto, Scientia Diligentia Virtus — knowledge, diligence, character — captures the convictions on which Torrey Pines Advanced Academy was founded.

A letter from the Head of School

When I founded Torrey Pines Advanced Academy, I did so because of a simple conviction: a small school, drawing on the depth of university-level instruction, can prepare students for the rigors of undergraduate computer science and mathematics in ways that larger institutions cannot. Through years of working in education — and through the conferences, conversations, and reading that have shaped my thinking from beyond it — I have come to hold a firm conviction: depth of study, not breadth of offerings, prepares students to be ready for serious academic work.

At TPAA, every student is known. Each student's research interests, mathematical strengths, and the questions that keep them curious are understood in detail by those who advise them. That knowledge allows advising to be precise and pushes each student toward their full capacity. We are not trying to do everything. We are trying to do one thing well: prepare a small number of students each year for the programs and careers where they will do their most important work.

I invite you to learn more about our school and what a focused, rigorous, and deliberately small academy can offer.

The Head of School

What we are here to do

Torrey Pines Advanced Academy prepares a small number of students each year for the most rigorous undergraduate programs in computer science, mathematics, and the sciences. We believe that depth of study, guided by university-affiliated instructors who are active researchers, will prepare graduates who shape the future of their fields.

What we hold to be true

Value

Precision

We value exactness in thought and work. Our students learn to write code that is correct, proofs that are complete, and arguments that are rigorous. Precision is not a constraint — it is a discipline that makes clear thinking possible.

Value

Ambition

We prepare students for the strongest undergraduate programs in their fields. Our curriculum is designed to meet the expectations of admissions committees and faculty at leading research universities, and our advising reflects that standard.

Value

Character

We develop ethical thinkers who understand that technical ability carries responsibility. Our students study the societal implications of the systems they will build, and they will graduate prepared to lead with principle.

Founded in Carmel Valley, 2023

Torrey Pines Advanced Academy was founded in 2023 in Carmel Valley, San Diego, on the conviction that a small, focused institution could prepare students for undergraduate computer science and machine learning programs with a depth that larger schools cannot match. The curriculum was designed around a four-year computer science sequence, university-mentored research, and rigorous preparation in mathematics and the sciences.

The school takes its name from the Torrey Pines, among the rarest species of pine in North America, found only along the coastal bluffs of northern San Diego County. Like its namesake, TPAA is deliberately small. We enroll a limited number of students each year — enough to sustain a true community of scholars, and few enough that every student is known individually and personally.
